travel insurance?

ANNIE T asked:

My husband has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He has been given between 3 months and one year to live.

We thought we would go for a short cruise in the Med but the only company who will insure us wants between £1800 and £2000 for a week’s insurance.

Does anyone know of anyone who will insure us for a reasonable amount. We could afford up to £500 for insurance.

One Comment to “travel insurance?”

    Hi:
First of all I am sorry to hear of your challenges and think you are both brave and it is wonder ful that you would even try.
I spoke to someone that has been in and around the insurance business for over 35 years:
Here is the problem [globally] with all the insurance companies and their coverage:

1: they do not insure for any treatment of any pre-existing conditions for travel, regardless of who underwrites the policy.

    2. they do not cover any medical costs that arise as a result of a complication that may have been triggered by a pre-existing condition. The party insured must prove at their expense that the condition is new and unrelated to a previous condition.

    3. This is how they get you: if you have ever gone for any tests for any condition with in the last two years they will take your premium but they will not pay an the basis that you you had a concern regarding this condition, that includes mamograms, eeg ekg , stress tests, blood tests, xrays etc.
Thereby eliminating most of the people that apply and have paid.

    4. the only recourse you have and it may take upto two years is to get a refund of premium. that is it . and it is costly in time and money. Unfortunately this is one of the short comings of the travel and mortgage insurance companies.

    5. Gerlling Global is a company that may underwrite , but they usually ahve a two year waiting period and they do not invoke the pre-existing condition clause after two years.

6.My advice speak to the oncologists, Mayo Clinic in the USA, and the WHO [world health organiztion]

    - look at the destinations of the cruise, Go to WHO page for Drs approved by the WHO and their affilates in that country
    take them with you.
Email them: ask What they are able to do in the event of an emergency?
    - arrange a meeting with your tavel agent and examine the cost of flying back from all the ports visited, the flight durations etc. take the agents info [affialtes in that country as well if they have any].You are now in a position to fly back and you will not be scrambling. The cost will in most cases be less than the premium.
    Be sure to
    - Get all the meds you can to feel comfortable
    - Get all the shots even those that ones one might not normally get like maleria, yellow fever, [ cancer treatment posses some restrictions on "live vaccines"]
    - get DUKORAL Rx as well,

REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU GET TO INSURE EXAMINE AND DISCUSS FULLY ALL THE EXCLUSIONS!

Ask to record that conversation because all good agents have “Errors and Omissions” insurance to cover what they may have forgot to tell you. If you can even get notes preferablly in the agents hand writing for obvious reasons.
    hope that helps a little
